Key to Good Vocabulary
Key to Good Vocabulary is a very basic word-learning program packed in an executable jar file that displays English words with their meanings in the alphabetical order.
The idea of expanding your vocabulary with this software is as follows: you can mark words as New, Mastered or Gray (in case the word is familiar but not yet mastered), and then set the program to show only words from any of these categories. Unfortunately, the program cannot be set to display words in random order; neither can you simply type in a word to look up its meaning. You can only navigate the dictionary by pushing the next and previous buttons. There is a 'Jump to word number' field, but it gets disactivated after you use it once.
The program abounds in formal and bookish words like Ablution, Braggadocio, Corporeal or Alacrity, so it could have served as an explanatory dictionary both for language learners and native speakers, if only it provided a search field. The software also showed some instabilities and failures. All these limitations evidently do not make Key to Good Vocabulary the most effective learning tool, but some language learners may still find it useful for some purposes.
